When ordering a custom cake, you have many factors to consider: What’s the occasion? What flavors and decorations do I want? When do I need to place my order?
But what about figuring out the cost of your cake? How can you get affordable custom cakes within your budget? Frost Artisan Bakery’s executive pastry chef, Jasmine Hidalgo, shares some tips.
Be Upfront About How Much You’re Willing to Spend
During your initial conversation with our bakery team, communicate your budget for a custom cake creation.
Knowing your budget, Hidalgo says, gives our team the ability to make recommendations based on how much you’re willing to spend. For example, for a wedding reception, a couple may want to opt for a single or two-tier wedding cake for cutting during photos and provide slices of sheet cakes or cupcakes for guests to enjoy.
Understand the Level of Complexity in the Details
The more elaborate elements or scale you wish to add, such as fondant sculptures, gum paste decorations, or modeling chocolate, the more a cake’s cost increases. Also, the more elaborate the decorations become, the more time it will take our bakery team to create them.
“Some of the cakes we make can take us eight to 16 hours to put together,” Hidalgo says, “depending on what the decoration is. You have to think of it as a piece of art.”
”"You have to think of it as a piece of art."
You can consider other decorating details to keep your custom cake within your budget. For example, instead of drawing buttercream designs onto a cake, our team can create an edible image on the cake that’s as delicious as it is appealing to look at.
Keep in Mind Special Requests and Seasons of the Year
In addition to the decorations for a cake, keep in mind the seasonality of any ingredients or items you want to add that may affect the price. For example, adding a cascade of fresh strawberries to a wedding cake will be more economical in late May and early June when strawberries are in season, versus in the middle of winter.
The choice of fillings and frostings can also impact your custom cake’s price tag. A chocolate mousse filling, for example, that needs to be specially prepared will involve more time than a simple cake filling, such as cherry, lemon, or raspberry.
