When you think about wedding desserts, you likely imagine a towering cake or maybe an elaborate dessert table. However, couples who choose to elope or host an intimate micro wedding have several delicious, more appropriately sized options for dessert. An elopement cake and other small wedding desserts are ideally suited for simple celebrations.

Elopement Cake

A customized elopement cake is a delicious way to celebrate tying the knot. A single 8- or 10-inch round decorated cake makes the perfect sweet bite that a couple can share together after the ceremony.

You can personalize an elopement wedding cake with buttercream frosting decorations or have your cake baker and decorator use tinted frosting or melted chocolate to write messages such as “Just married,” “Congratulations,” or the couple’s initials on top of the cake.

For couples planning a reception with a limited number of attendees, a two-tiered wedding cake is entirely appropriate and welcome at a small-scale celebration. Here, you can be as sophisticated or elaborate with the frosting decorations, cake, and filling as you’d like. Collaborate with your cake designer to create a cake that matches the theme and tone of your reception.

Groom’s Cake

For a small-scale wedding, you might consider serving a groom’s cake in addition to a small wedding cake.

The tradition of the groom’s cake can be traced back to the Victorian era in England, when, in addition to the main wedding cake, there was a groom’s cake and a smaller bride’s cake. At the end of the wedding, the two cakes were sliced and served to the groomsmen and bridesmaids.

Groom’s cakes have traditionally been made of dark chocolate and often contain fruit and liqueur. The earliest groom’s cakes, however, were fruitcakes.

According to tradition, the groom’s cake is not served at the wedding. But, if your wedding will be a small-scale celebration, you might choose to break with tradition and serve a groom’s cake to all your guests after the wedding cake is served.

Small Desserts for Wedding Celebrations

Couples who don’t want a traditional wedding cake should consider an assortment of mini desserts, which can be easily tailored to your guest count. One of the best parts about mini desserts lies in the variety you can offer your guests, with dozens of different desserts and flavors to choose from.

Bonbons, macarons, mini cheesecake bites, mini pies and tarts, and mini cupcakes are some examples of small desserts for wedding celebrations.
